November often brings conversations about gratitude. We're encouraged to focus on what we're thankful for, reflect on our blessings, and embrace positivity.
And while gratitude can be a powerful practice, it's important to acknowledge something else:
You can be grateful and still be struggling. At Unlaced, we believe both can exist at the same time.
The Problem With Toxic Positivity
Sometimes people unintentionally dismiss difficult emotions by saying things like:
"Just focus on the positive."
"It could be worse."
"You have so much to be grateful for."
While often well-intentioned, these statements can make people feel guilty for experiencing pain, stress, anxiety, or sadness.
Mental wellness isn't about pretending everything is okay.
It's about making space for the full range of human emotions.
Holding Two Truths
You can be thankful for your family and still feel overwhelmed.
You can appreciate your opportunities and still feel anxious.
You can celebrate your growth and still be healing.
Life isn't either-or.
Practicing Real Gratitude
Real gratitude is about recognizing moments of goodness even while navigating challenges.
Those moments matter.
Gratitude doesn't require us to minimize our struggles.
